Backup and sync
Backup is optional and needs Pro. Signing in or buying Pro does not by itself turn backup on.
What does Pro add?
Pro includes unlimited transcription and end-to-end encrypted backup and sync, with fair use of about 100 GB. It costs US$4.99 a month or US$29.99 a year; the app shows your local App Store price. Privacy, export and app lock stay free.
How do I turn on backup?
- In the library, choose More → Settings → Backup → Turn On Backup….
- Sign in with Apple, Google where offered, or your email and the six-digit code sent to it. There is no password; the email code works for ten minutes.
- If you need Pro, choose a plan. Then return to Backup and choose Turn On Backup.
- Follow the key and recovery-code steps. Check the Backup screen for progress and Backed up.
Backup covers audio, photos, extracted frames and text. Video files stay on the device and are included in export, not backup.
Who has the key?
Your private memories are encrypted on your device before backup. The key stays with you, never on our servers. We can't listen to or read them.
iCloud Keychain can carry the key to your other devices. Signing in alone is not enough to open an existing backup without its key.
How do I keep a recovery code?
When offered, save the code somewhere safe away from this iPhone, then tap I've Saved My Code. Wait for that step to finish. Later, Settings → Backup → Recovery Code… makes a new code; saving it replaces the old one. It does not show the old code again.
How do I restore on a new iPhone?
Sign in to the same Trunk account and choose Turn On Backup. If iCloud Keychain has not brought the key, use your saved recovery code or approve from a device that already has the key:
- On the new iPhone, choose Show a Code to Scan.
- On the other device, open Settings → Backup → Approve Another Device…. Scan the QR code, or paste the code copied from the new iPhone.
- Compare the six digits on both devices. Choose Approve only if they match.
If every device is lost, iCloud Keychain is off and there is no recovery code, nobody can open the backup. Reset Backup permanently removes that old backup and starts again from the memories on this iPhone. It cannot recover missing memories.
Why have my changes not arrived?
Open Trunk on each device and check Settings → Backup. Both need backup on with the same account. Files wait for Wi-Fi unless Use Cellular Data is on.
Pause Backup stops new backup passes. A current pass can finish while the screen says Pausing backup. Switch it off to resume. If the app says an update is needed, update Trunk before continuing.
What can you see?
We also say, plainly: we can see your email or Apple relay address and which sign-in you used, your subscription and its history with Apple, the devices you signed in from and when, how many encrypted memories and files you have, their sizes, and when they were made, changed or deleted, and the IP addresses your devices connect from. From a file's size we can guess a recording's length. We cannot see titles, words, pictures or sound.
The promise page explains the details and limits.
What if I cancel Pro?
Manage or cancel the subscription through Settings → Account → Manage Subscription. If Pro ends, your backup is kept for 90 days and then removed; memories on your phone stay. Apple handles App Store refunds.
How do I delete the backup and account?
Choose Settings → Account → Delete Account… and read the confirmation. It removes the account and backup; memories on this iPhone stay. If a service cannot finish immediately, the app says so and the server retries the remaining work.
Deleting the account does not cancel an Apple subscription. Cancel it separately in your Apple Account's subscription settings.
